Award for Excellence in Supply Chain Innovation in New South Wales

Winner: WESTFIELD - SYDNEY

Westfield - Sydney NSWGvt Innovation Award.jpg

Westfield and the Bestrane Group won the NSW Government-sponsored “Award for Excellence in Supply Chain Innovation in NSW” at the Smart Conference awards at Darling Harbour on 26 May.

Westfield replaced an inefficient paper-based dock delivery management system with a streamlined software-as-a-service (Saas) web-based solution from Bestrane Group.

The new system enables contractors, carriers, suppliers and retailers to manage delivery bookings in real time with appointments made online and checked on-site using handheld mobile wireless devices.

This has improved delivery performance, tracking and security while streamlining congestion and complex communication channels.

About 510 carriers and 240 retailers use the new system for up to 200 delivery bookings each day, with over 90 per cent of appointments handled automatically via the web requiring no interaction from dock management.

As a result, average vehicle dwell times at Westfield Sydney fell from 44 minutes to about 25 minutes – a 43 per cent improvement.

Award for Excellence in Supply Chain Management and Distribution

Winner: KIMBERLY-CLARK

Kimberly-Clark and Dexion SCMandD.jpg
Most companies these days have established, or are establishing, best-practice innovation and environmental programs which will ensure their business, and the supply chain industry, is sustainable.

The presentation of this joint application was the most outstanding of all submissions. Dexion and Kimberley Clark were able to clearly articulate savings as a result of achievements from their project. Their market advantage is enhanced by the way they involved their customers in the process.

Award for Excellence in Manufacturing Supply Chains

Winner: THE DULUX GROUP

Dulux Group - Manufacturing.jpg
The Dulux Group with Robotic Automation provided an example of lean manufacturing by improving flow in a production process, reducing waste in manpower, materials, and time. It has also improved OH&S of employees. The project has allowed the reduction in batch sizes (in line with lean objectives), which provides advantage to customers.

Award for Excellence in Transport and Logistics

Winner: St Vincent de Paul

St Vincent de Paul-Transport&Logistics.jpg
The winning entry from St Vincent de Paul and Infor, gave a detailed and quantified report of the implementation of Infor Routing Software to manage a state-wide fleet previously scheduled locally with a paper-based process.  The judges agreed this submission clearly showed significant improvement achieved with the application of new technology, and the associated attention given to process improvement and managing the workforce effectively to embrace the resultant changes.

The fact that this was achieved in a very busy and under-resourced not-for-profit organisation is worthy of additional commendation. Of note is the fact that this project is a part of a much larger program of work that will see the entire Victorian fleet routed from the one system by the end of 2011. The fact that the results were achieved by a not-for-profit organisation where costs are always a concern is of particular merit. Indeed, being able to push through changes required and getting wide acceptance for the proposals is considered of real merit.
