Held every two years, Smart Conference is the largest supply chain and logistics event staged in Australia and is the major forum of its type in Asia-Pacific, for practitioners to share insight and knowledge on the latest supply chain challenges facing businesses worldwide.
Increasingly gaining international recognition, the previous event - Smart 2007 Conference - welcomed 900 delegates from Australia and across the globe, including United States, China, Singapore, India, Germany, United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and Fiji.
The conference program will address issues of topical debate, concern and importance, and include several special interest streams. More than seventy local and international high profile experts in their field of practice will present around the theme, BRIDGING THE GAP with innovation & new business strategy.
Delegates will also be able to enjoy many additional educational and networking events.
The Smart Supply Chain Technology Show (SSCT) runs alongside Smart 2009, offering conference delegates the opportunity to view the latest supply chain technologies and solutions.
Smart’s 2009 inaugural Breakfast Seminars kicked off to a great start last week with guest speaker Jeffrey Hittner, Global Corporate Social Responsibility Leader for IBM Global Business Services and Yvonne Goldsmith, Manager of Sustainable Supply Chain Management for Westpac addressing key issues on the morning’s theme – ‘Corporate Social Responsibility & the Supply Chain: supply chain’s role in reducing carbon and contributing to growth’.
At the first two events in a series of breakfast seminars, Hittner spoke passionately about the importance of businesses developing CSR targets around ethical, environmental and social considerations, and the positive impacts that can result from a successful CSR program. Hittner also stressed the importance of transparent engagement with customers and stakeholders, sustainable growth, environmental responsibility and accountability and ethical conduct throughout the entire business chain.
Hittner works with a range of clients in industries including energy and utilities, banking, chemicals/petroleum, consumer products, retail, automotive and electronics, to address the emerging role of corporate social responsibility in core business strategies. He writes and speaks publicly on the topic of CSR and has been published in a variety of media, including recent articles in Forbes and CRO magazines.
Yvonne Goldsmith, Manager of Sustainable Supply Chain Management for Westpac, then provided attendees with insight into Westpac’s sustainable supply chain initiatives, whose program’s success has resulted in Westpac being named by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as one of the world’s ‘Most Sustainable Companies’ for the last seven years.
The breakfasts held in both Sydney and Melbourne were a great success and gave attendees a taste of what’s to come for next year’s Smart 2009 Conference, themed: BRIDGING THE GAP with innovation & new business strategy.
IBM gave breakfast attendees the chance to win either a 16GB Apple iPhone with $400 credit or a Voltaic Solar Laptop Bag. Paul Evans from Dematic, NSW and Lee Rawstron from Nufarm, VIC were the winners of the competition, each best answering the question "what is your biggest carbon management challenge.”
